| Invite Harmony to Your Home Travelers who have been to Thailand will recognize these enchanting structures, seen in most residential and business properties throughout the country. The Saan Chao Te, or spirit house, was designed long ago and is still commonly in use today as an appealing shelter for spirits. In Thailand, it is believed that spirits and souls inhabit the Earth and can influence the well-being of humans. Thus, when a person or family takes up residence in a place, a spirit house is often erected in the garden or entry way to the property, inviting the spirits to live in harmony with the people. Feed Your Spirits The basic three-part offering of a flower garland, a lighted incense stick, and candle — representing beauty, fragrance and light — is part of the ritual to please these spirits. It is also common to place daily offerings of edible food for the spirits. Visitors to Thailand will see spirit houses “fed” with everything from glasses of beer to bowls of rice to full dinner plates. Provide shelter for your ancestral spirits or simply add a touch of Thai spirit to your home or garden. |
