Elephant-Riding Chairs: Howdas
Home Accents
In Thailand, equipment for riding elephants evolved into some sophisticated forms, hardly surprising in a country that has domesticated elephants for centuries. Today, these chairs are still excellent for rugged riding of elephants and also for exotic lounging at home. The basic howda construction is a wide bench-like seat with raised sides and back, built over a yoke that is splayed to fit onto the elephant’s back. The howda was tied firmly to the back of the elephant with ropes passing through the rigs attached to its base and under the animal's belly .
