Monastery Roof Finials: Chofa
If there is one single feature that epitomizes Thai architecture, it is the
soaring, sweeping multi-tiered roof of monastery buildings. The
culmination of the roof, both literally and aesthetically, is
the curious ridge finial: the chofa. Chofa means “tassel of
air” and its shape is thought to derive from the Garuda, a
mythical guardian figure with bird-like features. Different
chofa abstract or stylize the bird to greater or lesser
degree. Today, chofa can still be seen on temple roofs
and also can be found in domestic interiors, as
decoration.
